What is Gudi Padwa?
Gudi Padwa is the traditional Marathi New Year, celebrated as New Year's Day by Maharashtrians and Konkanis with prayers, new clothes, festive foods and raising a Gudi for good luck.
When is Gudi Padwa celebrated?
It is celebrated on the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra, in the spring season at the start of Chaitra, the first month of the lunisolar Hindu calendar.
How do you wish someone a happy Gudi Padwa?
In Marathi say “Gudhi Padvyachya Hardik Shubhechha” (Wishing you a very Happy Gudi Padwa), and in English simply say “Happy Gudi Padwa and Happy Marathi New Year!”
What do you write in a Gudi Padwa card?
Write a warm New Year blessing for prosperity and happiness, such as the traditional “गुढी पाडव्याच्या हार्दिक शुभेच्छा!” which means “Heartfelt wishes for Gudi Padwa!”, plus a wish for success, health and sweetness in the new year.
